Washington– Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 3009, the Enforce the Law for Sanctuary Cities Act. Currently, there are nearly 300 jurisdictions have designated themselves as “Sanctuary Cities,” and are refusing to enforce our nation’s immigration laws. This bill preventsthose cities from receiving specific federal grants until they begin enforcing the law.
“Sanctuary cities are endangering the lives of American citizens by not following the law,” said Congressman Mike Conaway. “This legislation is a good start towards enforcing the law, but doesn’t permanently solve the much larger issue: our nation’s immigration laws are not being enforced and the president is turning a blind eye. Unfortunately, the President’s disregard for the law has led to preventable tragedies across the country. We need to enforce the laws that are in place for a very good reason: to keep our families and communities safe. This bill is just one piece of the plan that will be put forth by the Republican-controlled Congress to address our broken immigration system.”
