In a recent interview, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) called Marine Gen. Peter Pace, the outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, "incompetent." Reid made similar disparaging remarks about Army Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq. Today, Congressman Mike Conaway (TX-11) issued the following statement in response to Reid’s distasteful comments about U.S. military leaders in the Global War on Terror:

“I am extremely disappointed that the leader of the United States Senate would again denigrate our military commanders in such a cavalier and casual manner. As members of the United States Congress, it is our duty and responsibility to make sure that our public comments support our troops and commanders. Unfounded criticisms are irresponsible and harmful to the morale of our men and women and are helpful to our enemies. The insensitivity that Senator Reid has displayed is abhorrent, and an apology is owed to General Pace, General Petraeus, our troops, and the American people.”

On Wednesday, April 25, 2007, Senator Reid declared that the Iraq war is “lost”, causing Representative Duncan Hunter (R-CA), ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, to call for Reid’s resignation. Click here to read the story.
