Thank you for reading the Conaway Chronicle, a weekly review of my activities in Congress. I wanted to share with you my thoughts on the gun legislation introduced in the House and Senate this week.
This so-called assault weapons ban stands no chance of passing in the House of Representatives, and I will not support it.
It is reprehensible that some are willing to use tragedies like Newtown to advance their gun-control agenda. While we must work to reduce violence and address mental health treatment, taking away the constitutionally guaranteed rights of law-abiding citizens is not the answer.
NO BUDGET, NO PAY
I voted yes this week on the No Budget, No Pay Act, which passed the House 285-144.
If we are to get our fiscal house in order, we must start by passing a fiscally responsible budget, one that cuts spending and uses taxpayer dollars wisely. House leadership has presented two consecutive budgets that confront our nation’s spending problem, while Senate Democrats have failed to pass a budget for nearly four years. It’s time for that to end.
The Senate must join the House in presenting a budget to the American people that cuts spending and holds the government accountable. We cannot afford to consider a long-term increase in the debt limit without first addressing our spending addiction.
WELCOMING ODESSA'S NEW MAYOR
I met with new Odessa Mayor David Turner and his wife, Jami, in my Washington office recently and congratulated him on his recent victory. Mayor Turner and I spoke about many issues in Odessa, including the city's low unemployment rate and new development projects. I look forward to working with him.
