Honoring Women Airforce Service Pilots
The House of Representatives recently passed legislation honoring the Women Airforce Service Pilots, also known as WASPs, who were the first women in history trained to fly American military aircraft. These women made immeasurable contributions to our efforts in World War II, and they now have a museum dedicated to them in Sweetwater, TX- just outside the 11th district. The WASP program began in Houston, and then moved to Sweetwater for access to a larger facility and better flying weather. The program was proposed before WWII began, when it was suggested that using women to fly in non-combat missions would free up male pilots to focus on combat missions. The program began in summer of 1942, under the name Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS). The role of the first few women to take part was to ferry planes from factories to airfields. As the program expanded, so did the role of these brave women. Eventually, over 1,000 WASPs' graduated and went on to serve as the first women pilots in the U.S. Military. Not everyone knows of their heroism and sacrifices, but these women were truly remarkable and their contributions will not be forgotten.
Jake and Dorthy's Cafe
Jake and Dorothy's Cafe in Stephenville, Texas is an institution that has been around for over 67 years. Their chicken fried steak is legendary, as are their waffle fries. Their pies and cakes are simply terrific! Texas Monthly has named the cafe among the best in Texas, and for good reason- you can't miss this place. Have you ever stopped by Jake and Dorthy's Cafe?
As always, you can follow me on
Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.
Sincerely,

Rep. Mike Conaway, 11th District
