Conaway Chronicle: Creating Jobs, Situation in Ukraine, Imperial Presidency
Thank you for reading The Conaway Chronicle, a review of my activities in Congress and the 11th District.
Ruben Bustamante let me join him on his UPS route in Odessa on March 17th. Ruben has worked for UPS for 37 years. My fellow House Republicans and I have passed bills that will strengthen the economy and create good jobs for hard working men and women like Ruben. We know that a job is about more than the paycheck. It is about dignity. Senate Democrats and the President should work with us to help create those jobs that give meaning and purpose to people's lives. I appreciated Ruben letting me help him on his route. In the photograph on the right we are delivering packages to the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
First Baptist Church of Midland:
I appreciated the members of the First Baptist Church Fellowship Group taking the time to share their thoughts with me on March 17th. We discussed how we are all called to virtue and only by heeding that call, individually and as a nation, can we truly be great. Our country is incredibly blessed and we all must remember that to whom much is given, much is expected.
Russia has violated Ukraine's sovereignty and the United States is in a horrible position. President Obama has imposed limited sanctions against certain individuals, which is a weak response to Russia's aggressive behavior. I wish President Obama was held in better regard by Russian Leader Vladimir Putin, but he is not. This is a direct result of how President Obama conducted himself during the first four years of his presidency. Rather than display strength and resolve, President Obama went on a worldwide apology tour. The European Union is not in a position to stand up to Putin because they get most of their natural gas from Russia. Putin is a megalomaniac who wants to recreate the former Soviet Union's influence in the world. He will not stop where he is at. He will threaten other countries' sovereignty. There are two things that the United States could do to strengthen our position: lift restrictions on crude oil exports and expedite the construction of infrastructure needed to export natural gas. I am a co-sponsor of legislation to expedite the construction of natural gas export infrastructure. Increasing energy exports combined with President Obama showing strength and resolve, may limit the effects of Putin's aggressive behavior. My fellow House Republicans and I have raised concerns about President Obama's abuse of his executive power since 2012. In October of 2012, Majority Leader Eric Cantor issued a report on the rise of the "Imperial Presidency. The report cited over 40 separate examples of the break-down in the rule of law under the Obama Administration. We were concerned about the Constitutional implications of the President's power grab, but we were also concerned about its impact on overall economic growth and the prosperity of individual Americans. Unfortunately, the slow economic growth and the stubbornly high unemployment rate of the last two years have shown that our concerns were valid. The Majority Leader recently update the report. The updated report also includes details of Republicans' efforts to stop the President's abuse of executive power. Click here to read the updated report.
