Conaway Chronicle Volume 8, Issue 5
__________________________________________

Thank you for reading The Conaway Chronicle, a review of my activities in Congress. I wanted to share with you some news about a bill I cosponsored today.

The Down Payment to Protect National Security Act of 2013 (H.R. 593), which I also cosponsored last year, would pay for one year of the coming sequestration by reducing the federal civilian workforce by 10 percent.

Under this bill, federal agencies would be allowed to hire one person for every three who leave the agency through attrition, and pay for members of Congress would also be frozen.

This legislation would save approximately $85 billion and would prevent a year of draconian cuts to our military. I am proud to support this bill.

TEXAS WATER DAY

I spoke to Texans visiting Washington on Wednesday for Texas Water Day. I highlighted the need to keep conservation oversight and decision making at the state and local level – not the federal level.

Thanks to the members of the Texas Water Conservation Association for inviting me.

BONHAM JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

I spoke to Greta Black's ninth-grade AVID college-readiness class at Bonham Junior High School in Odessa today about the importance of education and my experiences growing up in the Ector County school system. After talking to them about my responsibilities as their congressman, I took their questions on many topics in the news, including Second Amendment rights, the federal budget and school safety.

SERVICE ACADEMY DAY

If you have a son or daughter who’s considering a career in the military, I encourage your family to attend my Service Academy Day March 2 at Angelo State University.

This event will provide parents, students and educators with information about the nomination process for our nation’s service academies. A nomination from a member of Congress is required to be considered for an appointment to the following service academies: West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

The Service Academy Day will be held from 1:30-4 p.m. at Angelo State University, MCS Building room 100, 2200 Dena Dr., San Angelo. My office will be joined by representatives from the offices of U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, the ROTC, and the service academies.

For more information, please call JoAnne Powell in the District 11 San Angelo office at (325) 659-4010.

Thank you for reading my newsletter, and I look forward to seeing you at one of my events in 2013. As always, you can follow me on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

Sincerely,

Rep. Mike Conaway, 11th District
